Workshop on NPTEL @ Ammini College of Engineering

A one-day workshop on NPTEL (National Program on Technology Enhanced Learning) was held at Ammini College of Engineering, Mankara in Palakkad on Saturday (28th November 20015). It was jointly organized by NPTEL, IIT Chennai and Ammini College of Engineering.

The workshop was conducted by Dr Prathap Haridoss, professor in Meallurgical and Materials Engineering, IIT Madras and Dr Andrew Thangaraj, Department of Electrical Engg, IIT Madras, Ms Bharathi Balaji and Ms Deepa Venkatraman, project officers of NPTEL, IIT Madras. As many as 130 faculty members, including senior professors and principals, from 40 colleges in Palakkad , Trichur and Malappuram districts participated in the workshop.

Stating that self-directed learning is getting prominence now-a-days, Pratap Haridoss, who conducted the first session of the workshop, said the NPTEL program is planned to enhance the quality of engineering education in the country by developing curriculum-based online courses. He said the program is offering 992 online courses, both short term and long term, in Engineering, Sciences, Technology, Management and Humanities.  He also said that about 200 million people watch NPTEL class room lectures on YouTube.

He said students can download NPTEL class room lectures and share them with their friends and others. There is no restriction even on copying the lectures on DVDs, he added.

In the second session of the programme, Dr Andrew Thangaraj spoke on the various courses offered by he NPTEL program. He said there is no registration fee, entry criteria etc. for joining the course. There is an exam fee of Rs 1000 for each course. The main difference between the NPTEL online course and other ordinary courses is that there is facility for online discussion to clear doubts. A student can post on the discussion forum his/her doubt on the subject he has chosen for the course and the doubt will get cleared within hours as the forum is being continuously monitored by the subject experts and other forum members. Regarding examination centres, he said as such there is only one exam centre in Kerala, but more would be considered with the opening of more local chapters.

Ms Bharathi Balaji, project officer, said there is no membership fee for starting a local chapter. Moreover, there is no stipulation that a fixed number of members are required for starting a chapter. She also said that a local chapter can request the NPTEL to start the courses which it wants offer.

Deepa Venkatraman also spoke on the various aspects of the online courses being offered by the NPTEL program.

Earlier, the workshop was inaugurated by Ammini College of Engineering chairman K G Madhu. College principal Dr P R Chandrasekhar delivered the presidential address. Certificates were given away to those who attended the workshop.
